Five things I bet you didn’t know about the Blue Lagoon

Stay Onsite

There are not one but two luxury hotels at the Blue Lagoon. We stayed at Silica Hotel and *wait for it* they have their own private lagoon! If seclusion and decadence is your game, this is the place to play.

That blue water is salty.

It’s from a geothermal phenomenon happening 2000 meters down where fresh and ocean water mix in “a volcanic frontier of searing heat and immense pressure”. It does have a high silica content which is therapeutic on your skin but could make your hair stiff and unmanageable, especially if its color treated. I found it to be the ultimate volume product and didn’t wash it out.

The relaxation is real.

Something about the warm blue water and fresh cold air just melts the stress away and turns you to jelly. Icelandic hospitality doesn’t disappoint and they really know how to run a spa. Tacking on an Icelandic stopover on your way home from a European vacation is the way to go.

Spring for the Premium Ticket.

Keep your towel and flip flops in your locker for showering after your soak and wear your robe out to the lagoon. Be forewarned, your robe is fair game for being swiped by another guest. I tied a hair tie around mine just so it wouldn’t be mistaken.

You’ll want the extra drink and mask while you are soaking, I promise.

It’s more than just a pretty pool.

The lagoon has varied heat zones, a waterfall, steam rooms and sauna. Definitely take the time to explore!
